Motorcycle Helmet
About Project
Helmet that Matches the KTM.
A hand-painted motorcycle helmet that perfectly matches KTM 950.
Step 1
Ideation and Sketching
The client wanted a fully customized helmet that would perfectly match his KTM 950 motorcycle. To achieve this, several design sketches were created, allowing him to choose the one that best suited his vision. The color palette was carefully selected to complement the KTM 950, incorporating black, white, grey, and the signature KTM orange.
The final design features a combination of Gothic calligraphy, displaying a meaningful sentence chosen by the client. Additionally, a black, grey, and white patch-like pattern, inspired by the motorcycle’s existing design, adds a cohesive touch. To complete the look, an abstract calligraphy pattern in white and orange overlays the design, adding a bold and dynamic element to the overall aesthetic.
Step 2
Preparing the Helmet
The preparation process for the helmet follows several key steps. First, the helmet is thoroughly cleaned to remove any dust, oil, or residue that could interfere with the painting process. Once cleaned, it is carefully sanded to remove the top coat and create a textured surface that allows the paint to adhere properly. After sanding, a primer is applied to establish a smooth and durable base coat, ensuring the design adheres effectively and maintains its longevity.
Step 3
The Painting Process
The painting process involves multiple layers to achieve the desired look, as outlined in the initial sketch. It begins with applying the base coat, featuring a carefully crafted grey, black, and white pattern that serves as the foundation of the design. Next, the vibrant orange calligraphy writing is painted, wrapping around the helmet. Finally, the process is completed with the addition of an abstract calligraphy pattern on the top of the helmet, adding depth and a distinctive artistic touch.
Step 4
Gothic Calligraphy
The Gothic calligraphy in orange is carefully executed without the use of stencils, adhering to a traditional, hand-crafted approach. Each letter is individually created with attention to detail, using the instrument to write freely across the helmet’s surface. The artist is mindful of every line and curve, ensuring that the flow of the calligraphy is both precise and fluid. To further enhance its visibility and contrast against the design, each letter is outlined with a thin black stroke, making the writing bold and striking.
Step 5
The Result
The result speaks for itself: a bold and artistic helmet that demands attention. This one-of-a-kind design is impossible to find in stores, making it truly unique. The helmet is fully hand-painted on all sides, showcasing intricate details that captivate the eye – from the gothic calligraphy to the abstract line patterns.
Viewed from above, the helmet features fluid-like lines that seem to float gracefully across its surface. From the side, however, the design takes on a more rugged appearance, with geometric patterns and the bright orange gothic calligraphy making a striking contrast.
Overall, the helmet stands out with its vibrant presence. Its simplicity in color palette – mainly black, grey, and white does not diminish its boldness. The addition of KTM orange adds just the right pop, ensuring the helmet remains bright, visible, and unforgettable.
Final Thoughts
I truly enjoyed working on this helmet. It gave me the opportunity to experiment with freehand abstract writing as a unique pattern, which was both exciting and creatively fulfilling. I had the freedom to incorporate gothic calligraphy around the entire helmet, allowing the design to come to life in a way that felt organic and expressive. This project was both interesting and challenging, pushing me to think outside the box. But in the end, the result speaks for itself, and I couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out.
